Faculty Positions
The Diabetes Clinical Research Program (DCRP) at Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) seeks to recruit outstanding applicants for a new faculty position. The appointment will be at the at the assistant, associate or full member level, commensurate with experience, training and achievement. The DCRP is an international leader in type 1 (autoimmune) diabetes research. The program’s goal is to help families with type 1 diabetes by investigating ways to prevent the disease, finding new approaches of diagnosing it in its earliest stage to optimize the potential for successful treatment, and testing innovative new therapies. We are looking for an investigator with strong interest in clinical research and clinical trials to take a leadership role within the DCRP and work on national, regional, and local projects in type 1 diabetes. The Montreal Diabetes Research Center at the University of Montreal, has two Postdoctoral positions available at the Rutter laboratory. The laboratory studies pancreatic beta cell biology and its perturbations in type 2 diabetes (Rutter et alDiabetologia, 63(10):1990-1998. doi: 10.1007/s00125-020-05205-5, 2020). The objectives of the two projects are to explore the role and regulation of interactions between beta cells within the pancreatic islet using live cell imaging and optogenetics (Project 1), and to understand how genomic variants associated with type 2 diabetes impact pancreatic beta cell function (Project 2). The successful applicants will hold a PhD or equivalent. Experience in islet biology and/or glucose homeostasis, calcium signaling and image analysis (Project 1) or CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, culture of human-derived beta cells or directed differentiation of embryonic stem cells towards a beta cell fate would be advantageous. The University of California, San Francisco, is looking for recent Ph.D to pursue a career in science and biotechnology at the intersection of immunology and aging. People trained in my lab pursue careers in academia, biotech start-ups, venture funds or consultants for large firms. The long-term goal of my research is to understand the role of tissue secretory senescent cells in diseases such as autoimmunity, diabetes and diseases of aging. We have identified key immune cells that can selectively eliminated senescent cells in a number of diseases associated with aging. We use a combination of mouse models of autoimmunity and humanized mouse models transplanted with senescent cells to investigate the underlying mechanism by which tissue senescent cells contribute to the development of the various diseases. We pay salaries that are more generous than traditional academic scales. The collegiality and interdepartmental organization at UCSF fosters interdisciplinary research that helps hone research skills, critical thinking, and scientific writing for a broad range of jobs. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking an outstanding Post-Doctoral candidate to join our multi-disciplinary team focused on mass spectrometry (MS) based omics analyses. This project is part of the Human Islet Research Network funded by the National Institute of Health. We are investigating the roles of alternative splicing in beta cell stress and development of type 1 diabetes. The project focus on the identification and validation of alternative splicing products by global and targeted proteomics, respectively. The candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. The ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Endocrinology, Analytical Chemistry, Systems Biology, Physiology or related fields. Diabetes Research at Washington University in St. Louis has a postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Hughes Lab, to study primary cilia in islet cells. The laboratory combines standard molecular and cell biology with advanced imaging techniques to explore novel roles of cilia in mouse and human islets. We have generated new cilia knockout mouse models with strong diabetic phenotypes and are looking for someone to lead the investigation of cilia mediated signaling mechanisms in islet hormone secretion. For human studies, we have a funded project to image primary cilia in T1D pancreas which will generate important and clinically relevant findings in autoimmune diabetes. The laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey Millman in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipid Research at Washington University School of Medicine is searching for a postdoctoral associates to lead several new research projects in the lab. Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Associate for the Child Health Institute of New Jersey. The Arrojo e Drigo lab at Vanderbilt University focuses on the mechanisms regulating post‐mitotic cell homeostasis and longevity. Many postmitotic cells can be as old as the organism, which makes them remarkably long‐lived. We study long‐lived cells in different organs and explore their developmental trajectory, structure‐function and aging patterns. Our lab uses a combination of single cell sequencing and high‐resolution light, electron and isotope microscopy platforms to overlay cell structure‐function with molecular identity, age and metabolism. Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to study the physiology of long‐lived cells in the pancreas. Two Postdoctoral positions in the Kulkarni Lab at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School. For the first position, applications are invited for prospective Post-Doctoral Fellows to train in the Kulkarni Lab. The two positions are available immediately for a period of 2 years with the possibility of extending for a third year based on available funds and performance. Applications are invited from qualified individuals with a PhD or MD or MD PhD degrees and interested in working in exciting projects focused on defining pathways and identifying mechanisms that regulate pancreatic (endocrine and exocrine) biology and interrogating inter-organ cross talk in the overall maintenance of glucose homeostasis using induced pluripotent stem cells and animal models. Successful candidates should have a strong background in molecular biology, cell biology (stem cells) and biochemistry. It is strongly preferable to have prior experience in bioinformatics and the ability to interrogate “omics” and sequencing datasets. Prospective candidates should possess skills in handling human islets and undertake animal studies. It would be an advantage to be able to undertake rodent islet isolation, and perform immunostaining. For the second position candidates with expertise in bioinformatics will be especially relevant. The Department of Molecular & Medical Genetics at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic post-doctoral fellow to study adeno-associated virus (AAV) and its application for human gene therapy in the lab led by Professor Hiroyuki Nakai, M.D., Ph.D. Specifically, the lab is looking for a post-doctoral researcher who can lead productively a newly funded multi-PI (MPI) NIH project ” U01DK123608 (MPIs: Nakai, Grompe and Kay): Gene Therapy for Diabetes, ” where we seek to develop clinically relevant novel AAV vectors and methods for in vivo regeneration of insulin-secreting beta cells in rhesus macaques and profoundly understand the mechanisms behind the technologies. The main research focuses of the Nakai lab are: (1) AAV vector biology – capsid assembly, genome packaging, and virus-host interactions in rodents and non-human primates; (2) AAV antigen-antibody interactions; (3) developing novel vectors by engineering of AAV capsids; and (4) preclinical studies of gene therapy for the treatment of various human diseases including type I diabetes. The lab takes a multidisciplinary approach to solving these problems, utilizing both wet and dry lab techniques. The lab is a part of the Human Islet Research Network (HIRN) supported by the NIH NIDDK.
