Human Islet Research Enrichment Center (HIREC)
►Where are you from originally, and where did you go to school?
I am originally from Western Massachusetts. I went to Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, MA) for my undergraduate and Univ. of Massachusetts School of Public Health and Health Sciences (Amherst, MA) for Graduate School.
►What is your HIREC position and what do you enjoy about your work?
I am the Program Manager for the Human Islet Research Enhancement Center (HIREC). I enjoy working with a diverse group of individuals committed to learning more about T1D and how to find a cure. I have multiple varying responsibilities as the HIREC Manager and this enables me to work on different tasks every day to truly have a multifaceted work experience.
►Why did you decide to work in scientific research?
Growing up I knew I wanted to work in science and/or healthcare. Having worked in a lab for a while I quickly learned that I preferred interacting with people instead of drosophila! As my academic career evolved I fell into public health and discovered my niche in participating in scientific research..
► What groups are you involved in?
Personally, I am active in my local neighborhood (former Association President), schools (PTO member), and I lead a book club!
►When not working, what are your favorite hobbies/activities?
I enjoy reading, traveling and swimming. Most of my “free time” is spent shuttling my two kids to their activities thus their activities have become my activities!
